Automation of a Classic Wooden Five-Bar Farm Gate
Location - Leicestershire

This project focused on bringing modern convenience and full safety compliance to a traditional five-bar wooden farm gate. The gate, while full of rustic charm, previously operated manually and had become inconvenient for regular use.

We installed a Roger Technology automation system, ensuring reliable operation while preserving the gate’s character. To achieve full compliance with current gate safety regulations, several key measures were carried out:

  • Gate adjustment: The gate was lowered to reduce the ground clearance to less than 100mm, removing the need for horizontal safety edges.
  • Safety edges: An ASO Leading Edge and ASO Hinge Edge were installed to provide maximum safety during operation.
  • Photocells: Both Gateline photocells and Setback photocells were fitted, mounted on a custom wooden post, offering layered protection for all entry and exit points.
  • Maglock installation: A maglock was added to keep the gate securely closed, reducing strain on the motor and providing stability in an area known for high winds.

The result is a system that is not only practical and reliable but also safe, secure, and tailored to the site’s conditions.

Following completion, the customer left a 5-star review on Google:

“Alex and Tom have just completed automation of our gate. Nice tidy professional job, would definitely recommend. Both really nice, helpful and polite, also very knowledgeable and know their stuff. Thank you both.”

This project highlights our ability to blend modern automation with traditional design, delivering both convenience and peace of mind.

Automation Upgrade – Multiple-Occupant Residential Site
Location - Ansty, Leicester

We were recently tasked with replacing a failed 22-year-old CAME FROG 230V system at a multi-occupant residential site. After careful assessment, the existing gates were retained, as they remained in excellent condition and were still structurally sound. Instead, the focus was on upgrading the automation and safety systems to bring the installation up to modern standards.

Key Works Completed:

  • System Replacement: Installed a ROGER Technology 36V underground kit, designed for high-intensive use but chosen primarily for its proven long-term reliability.
  • Future-Proofing: A new duct was installed to allow for easier upgrades or additional features in the years to come.
  • Safety Upgrades: The gates were brought fully up to current gate safety regulations, including:
  • ASO leading edge
  • ASO horizontal edge
  • ASO hinge edges
  • Locinox B-Safe anti-fall straps
  • Howter-branded gate warning signs

Resident Feedback

Throughout the project, every resident we had contact with praised us for our polite and professional approach. Feedback highlighted how happy they were with the quality of workmanship and the end result, giving the entire community renewed confidence in their entrance system.

We were also made to feel very welcome on site — with residents regularly offering tea, drinks, and even the use of their facilities if needed. Their hospitality was very much appreciated and made the project even more rewarding to complete.

Outcome

This upgrade provides the residents with a safe, reliable, and future-ready gate automation system that will serve them for many years. By combining the reuse of their solid existing gates with modern automation and safety features, we delivered a cost-effective, regulation-compliant, and high-quality solution that exceeded expectations.

Paxton Net2 Installation – Newly Built School Kitchen
Location - Nottinghamshire School

As part of a major kitchen refurbishment project at a Nottinghamshire school, we were commissioned to install a secure access control system using the Paxton Net2 platform.

The newly constructed kitchen required controlled entry points to help prevent and manage cross-contamination, as only authorised kitchen staff are permitted access to the area. This setup also ensures compliance with food hygiene and fire safety regulations, while maintaining operational efficiency for deliveries.

The main entrance to the kitchen was fitted with a Paxton P50 Reader on the external side, allowing authorised staff to gain access using proximity fobs.

Inside, a maglock was installed to keep the door securely locked when not in use.

For ease of exit, a Request to Exit (RTE) button was fitted, along with an Emergency Break Glass unit to allow immediate door release in the event of an emergency.

The exit and delivery door was equipped with a Paxton KP50 Reader, which provides dual access functionality via keypad or fob, ideal for deliveries or non-regular users. Internally, the same safety and security features were implemented, including a maglock, RTE button, and Emergency Break Glass.

To improve communication with kitchen staff, the KP50 was also configured to sound an internal alarm when the bell button is pressed, alerting them to someone waiting at the door.

Both doors were fully integrated with the school’s fire alarm system. In the event of an alarm activation, the maglocks automatically release, allowing for a safe and rapid evacuation of the kitchen area in line with fire safety regulations.

This installation offers a comprehensive, secure, and compliant access control solution tailored specifically to the operational needs of a modern school kitchen. By combining ease of access, staff safety, and fire regulation compliance, the Paxton Net2 system ensures that the facility remains both secure and functional.

School SEND Classrooms
Location - Leicester

Following on from our recent work providing a temporary reception access control system at this school, we were invited back to assist with a new safeguarding requirement.

The school needed two dedicated SEND classrooms to be secure while still allowing safe and controlled access for staff.

As the school already uses Paxton Switch2 throughout the site, we installed matching systems to keep everything consistent. Each classroom was fitted with internal and external Paxton P50 readers, positioned to meet DDA regulations and ensure accessibility for all authorised users.

To secure the doors, we installed maglocks along with emergency break glasses. For additional safeguarding, these break glasses were placed out of students’ reach. However, in the event a student did activate one, the system was designed to trigger a sounder alert, immediately notifying the teacher of the action.

The installation was completed to a high standard and fully integrated with the school’s existing system.

Our point of contact, Andy, was very pleased with the outcome and the added layer of safeguarding now in place for the SEND classrooms.

School Renovation
Location - Leicester

Howter Automation & Electrical Services were appointed to work alongside a Leicestershire-based construction company, currently undertaking a reception extension at a local school. During the works, the contractors required a fully functioning temporary reception that maintained the same level of security and accessibility as the permanent one.

To achieve this, we were tasked with supplying and installing Paxton access control and Videx intercom systems with handsets. To help alleviate some of the financial pressure on the school's budget, we carefully relocated the school’s existing systems to the temporary reception area. We also wanted to express our gratitude for the opportunity to work on this project, so we generously provided an additional Videx keypad at no extra cost.tra cost as a thank you for the opportunity to work on this project.

Key project elements included:

  • Relocation of existing Paxton access control, Videx intercom and handsets to the new temporary reception.
  • Integration of a magnetic lock on a patio sliding door, controlled via Paxton readers, an RTE (Request to Exit) button and an internal switch, ensuring secure and convenient access.
  • Upgrading a manual pedestrian gate by fitting a gas closer and magnetic lock, preventing unauthorised student exits.
  • Running new cabling from the main building to the gate to integrate the access control systems.
  • Installation of a Videx intercom at the gate for visitor communication with reception staff.
  • Supplying and fitting a Videx keypad free of charge, allowing staff to enter without contacting reception.

Although this solution was only required for three and a half months, we ensured the system was completed to the highest standard. The contractors praised our attention to detail and the professional finish delivered, even for a temporary setup.

Once the new reception extension is complete, our team will return to remove, relocate and commission the systems into their permanent locations, while also providing upgrades where required.

Thanks to the quality of our work and the service provided, we have already been awarded additional projects with the contractor and look forward to continuing our successful partnership.

Intercom Upgrade
Location - Mapperley Top, Nottingham

We recently swapped out an old VIDEX intercom system for a brand-new AES GSM Intercom, and the upgrade is fantastic! The customer now enjoys a modern, reliable, and user-friendly way to manage access, combining style with functionality.

The installation went smoothly, with everything done neatly and a full setup of GSM connectivity. This means the customer can now open the gate right from their mobile device, making things way more convenient. Plus, the new intercom looks sleek and performs flawlessly.

After the job was done, the customer shared an amazing 5-star review, raving about our workmanship and the service they received:

"Alex and Tom have just installed a new intercom for my gates. The service and quality of workmanship were exceptional!! Couldn’t recommend them enough."

The old Videx intercom had unfortunately left dirt marks on the render behind it. We attempted to clean the area and offered to repaint the render. Although our customer declined the offer, he expressed his appreciation for our attention to detail and our willingness to go the extra mile to ensure the job looked its best.

This project really shows how much of a difference an upgrade can make. Moving from an outdated intercom to a smart GSM solution ensures better access control and enhances the overall user experience.

Gate repairs
Location - Nottingham City Centre

We recently undertook significant upgrades to a wooden gate system to enhance its functionality and stability. The project involved the installation of a new treated wooden post, which was necessary due to the deterioration of the original post that had rotted over time. This decay had caused the gate to sag, rendering it unusable and compromising its security.

In addition to the post replacement, we also upgraded the existing CAME foundation case. The casing had suffered from split welds, which led to movement in the ground and increased strain on the automation components. Recognising the importance of a solid foundation for optimal performance, we replaced the compromised foundation case during the post-installation.

The outcome of our efforts is a robust and well-supported gate system with a fully functional and secure underground motor. This upgrade not only restores usability but also significantly improves the gate's opening and closing action, allowing for a smoother and more reliable experience. Our customer can now have peace of mind knowing their gate is safe, secure, and operating at peak efficiency.

Aluminium Sliding gate installation
Location - Nottingham

This 7.5-meter-long black aluminium sliding gate is the perfect blend of modern elegance and advanced technology. Designed not only to enhance the look of a property but also to deliver long-lasting performance, it makes a striking statement from the moment you see it.

Powered by Roger Technology’s reliable sliding gate automation, the system ensures smooth and consistent operation with every use.

To add to its convenience, the installation has been integrated with the Optimus EK1 GSM intercom, allowing users to control access directly from their phone—combining security with ease of use.

Safety has also been made a top priority. The gate is fully compliant with current Gate Safety Regulations and is equipped with photocells and resistive safety edges. The leading edge has been neatly concealed when closed, providing both protection and a clean, professional finish.

This installation goes beyond being just a gate—it’s a statement of style, security, and reliability.

New Gate Automation with new Video Intercom
Location - Ruddington

We recently completed our latest installation for a customer who had a 20-year-old Ditec sliding gate system. Unfortunately, the system failed three years ago. Additionally, the gate's support posts had started to shift, causing them to lean. As a result, the gate was not operating correctly. Over the years, this misalignment led to the gate warping and twisting, which likely contributed to the motor's eventual failure.

The Videx intercom had also failed and had been out of service for years. We discovered that the issue was with the cable, but the unit itself had serious water ingress damage. Our customer recognised it was time to replace both the automation system and intercom, as well as enhance the security of having a functioning gate.

We began by cutting across the driveway to lay new ducting, allowing us to replace the cables.

We removed the old automation system and excavated a substantial area around the supporting posts in order to replace them, ensuring they were level and securely anchored in a large concrete base. We also managed to eliminate the twist in the gate, allowing it to slide smoothly and fit perfectly into the catch when closed.

For the new automation, we chose the ROGER Technology BG30/1604 Brushless Sliding Gate Motor due to its reliability and impressive range of features. We also installed new ROGER Technology gate-line photocells and multiple safety edges to ensure compliance with current gate safety regulations.

Additionally, we removed the old internal keypad and relocated it from the metal post to the brick pier to prevent unauthorised access. This change reduces the risk of someone reaching through the gate to operate the keypad, ensuring the gate opens safely without taking anyone with it.

The customer expressed a desire to upgrade the old audio intercom to a video option. We opted for the Intratone SC-01 GSM, which not only opened the vehicle gate but also disengaged the magnetic lock on the pedestrian gate for access. This system worked flawlessly!

Finally, we pressure-washed the gate to remove the moss, algae, and dead paint that had accumulated from sitting unused for over three years. After cleaning, we sprayed the gate with black paint, revitalising this 20-year-old wrought iron gate.

We're really pleased with the outcome and another happy customer!

Aston Martin
Location - Nottingham

We are thrilled to have had the opportunity to complete work for Aston Martin Nottingham.

A lorry hit their rear gate, luckily not causing damage to the gate itself but mangling the Nylofor mesh covering it.

We replaced the damaged mesh with a new Nylofor mesh. Most of the mounting clips were able to be reattached in their previous positions, but 3-4 mounting clips had to be moved.

These clips had to be drilled and tapped to secure the mesh to the gate, as the previous fixings were ripped out during the impact.

The end result is a new 2.3m wide by 2.1m high black mesh finished with black netting to obscure the view into the premise.

Even though it was a small job we completed it to the high standard we strive for leaving us with another satisfied customer who will contact us for any future service needs.

Sliding Gate Repair
Location - Nottingham

We were contacted by a nottinghamshire based company, who is part of a large nationwide group. They asked us to assess and provide a quote to replace their non-functioning sliding gate automation.

We were thrilled when we were chosen for the job and given the go-ahead with our quote.

We replaced the old system with a ROGER Technology BG30/2204 sliding gate motor, capable of moving a 2200Kg gate.

The gate we worked on was very large and heavy, but well within the rating of this motor. We chose this motor because we've had great experiences with ROGER Technology, and we were not disappointed.

The motor not only moved the gate with ease but was also quiet, smooth, and packed with features!

After completing the job and handing the system over, our contact was delighted with how smooth and quiet it was, as well as the overall quality of our work.

We later found out that our contact had recommended us to other branches within the group and would be recommending us to other businesses within the industrial estate.

Additionally, we've been granted the contract to oversee the entire site from next year onwards.

More information to come in the new year!

Gate Repair/Restore
Location - Woodthorpe

After 8 years of being inoperable and deemed unrepairable, the customer wanted us to inspect it. If it was beyond repair, we were to provide a quote for a new system. After checking the system, we found that the only issues were a failed guide roller and damaged photocells due to water ingress, possibly because they were installed upside down. Apart from these issues, the gate and the motor were in good condition.

We replaced the guide roller and the photocells, ensuring they were installed correctly. Additionally, we performed a full service on the gate, resulting in a smooth operation of the gate and motor. As a result, we didn't need to quote for a new automation system, saving the customer a lot of money and leaving them happy with the outcome.

New Gate Automation with new Video Intercom
Location - Nottingham

Our customer had this old 18-year-old system that was pretty much on its last legs.

We completely removed our customer's old and broken automation and started from scratch, whilst using the current gates and posts.

We installed two new CAME foundation casings & CAME FROGA24E Motors, complete with new ducting and cable across the drive. In addition, we fitted the new CAME ZLX24 Control panel and finished up the automation by fitting all the necessary equipment to ensure it met current EN & Gate safety regulations.

We made an extra effort to inspect and fix the customer's pedestrian gate, which has had a faulty electronic lock for years.

Lastly, we installed a Hik-Vision video intercom system that will complement the customer's new Hik-Vision CCTV cameras, which we'll install shortly.

Intercom Upgrade & Gate control panel replacement.
Location - Burton

We installed a brand new Telguard GSM intercom to replace our customer's old broken keypad. Upgrading to this GSM intercom provides the customer with the capability to know when someone is at their gate.

When the call button is pressed, the intercom will call through to the programmed numbers. If the first number called isn't answered, it will divert the call to the next programmed number.

Additionally, we can program an authorised number list so that if it calls the intercom, the gate will be opened automatically.

One of the advantages of using this intercom is that it is all programmed via an app. Once installed, if the customer wants to change the numbers it calls, authorised callers, or keypad code in the future, we can do this remotely from wherever we are.

There is also a "trade" button that allows access without the need to give out the keypad code. This is highly useful for situations such as expecting an Amazon delivery or a postman. The trade button can also be programmed to grant access during specific hours.

We also replaced their faulty control panel, which had failed because the enclosure was cracked, allowing water in, and the entry points were not properly sealed during installation.

We started fresh with a new BENINCA control panel, tidied up the cabling, and reran it in a

flexible conduit to provide protection. Previously, the cables were run directly into the enclosure with no protection.

We made sure to replace any localised cables at no extra cost to our customer just to give us peace of mind. And as a thank you to our customer for taking the time to keep us refreshed with nice cold drinks on a very hot day!

All this left us with an extremely satisfied customer who kindly took the time to leave us a wonderful review on Google.
